From the Editor |

Over the past few years, an increasing number of dietary supplements have become available in supermarkets and health food shops and they are also available for purchase in pharmacies.
The term "nutraceutical" is used to describe these medicinally or nutritionally functional foods. Nutraceuticals, have also been called medical foods, designer foods, phytochemicals, functional foods and nutritional supplements.
In any case, whether prescribed by a doctor or self-selected, the logical place for the supply of these supplements is the pharmacy where pharmacists are able to offer professional advice. The challenge is therefore to be up to date with research developments so that both conventional practitioners as well as members of the public are able to receive accurate information.

Dr. Webber:
Use hot compresses and get another opinion. Using steroids on children requires great care.

News Briefs: Cut-free eye surgery reduces pain |
| |
The latest advance in laser eye surgery has been launched by an opthamologist in Brisbane.
The new surgery allows patients to have laser surgery without their eye being cut, meaning the 30 minute procedure is painless from start to finish.
Dr Peter Stewart performed the surgery on 15 patients in clinical trials, and hopes to perform 1,000 more in the next year now that the Therapeutic Goods Administration has approved the operation.
Ally Koller, who was the first patient to undergo the surgery, says it has changed her life.
"I couldn't see if I went to the beach to go swimming, I couldn't see in the middle of the night and now I have perfect vision," she said.
"My life is changed, I'm free.
"I'm really enjoying my children and my new life."
The surgery is not covered by most healthcare funds or Medicare and costs close to $5,000.

Preventative Medicine: Avocados an Answer to Macular Degeneration? |
| |
Break out the salsa and guacamole! Nutritionists have found that avocados boost absorption of lutein-which may help protect against age-related macular degeneration-as well as alphacarotene and beta-carotene when eaten with other foods. Avocados are rich in dietary lipids, which are likely to be an important factor in carotenoid availability. Yet most fruits and veggies that are high in carotenoids are also low in lipids. The lipids in avocados, when added to salads and salsa, can significantly enhance the carotenoid absorption that occurs when those foods are eaten.
Unlu NZ, Bohn T, Clinton SK, Schwartz SJ. Carotenoid absorption from salad and salsa by humans is enhanced by the addition ot avocado or avocado oil. J Nutr 2005 Mar;135(3):431-6
